During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
