Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
